에너지 저장 시스템(ESS, Energy Storage System)은 전기 에너지를 저장하고 필요한 시점에 공급하는 시스템을 말합니다. ESS는 전력 공급의 안정성과 효율성을 높이는 데 도움이 되며, 재생에너지 발전시스템과 결합하여 발전량의 변동을 관리하거나 전력소비를 최적화하는데 활용됩니다.

ESS는 다양한 저장 기술을 활용하여 에너지를 저장할 수 있습니다. 가장 일반적인 에너지 저장 기술은 다음과 같습니다.
1. 전기화학적 에너지 저장: 리튬 이온 배터리, 납산 배터리, 알카리 배터리 등의 전지를 사용하여 전기 에너지를 저장하고 방전하는 방식입니다.
2. 기계적 에너지 저장: 플라이휠이나 압축공기 에너지 저장(CAES) 등의 방법으로 기계적 에너지를 저장하고 전기 에너지로 변환하여 사용합니다.
3. 열 에너지 저장: 물, 물질이나 기체의 상태 변화를 통해 에너지를 저장하고 필요할 때 다시 전기 에너지로 변환하는 방식입니다. 예를 들어, 축열 물질이나 냉각 매체 등이 사용됩니다.
4. 전기적 에너지 저장: 슈퍼캐패시터나 초전도자를 사용하여 전기 에너지를 저장하고 필요할 때 사용하는 방식입니다.

각 저장 기술은 서로 다른 에너지 밀도, 효율, 수명, 비용 등의 특성을 가지므로, 특정 에너지 저장 시스템에 따라 적합한 기술을 선택해야 합니다.
