바이오디젤이란?

바이오디젤이란 식물성 오일 또는 동물성 지방을 가공하여 만든 대체 연료입니다. 바이오디젤은 디젤 엔진에서 사용할 수 있는 천연 자원 기반의 연료로, 환경 친화적이며 기존의 석유 디젤 연료보다 낮은 온실가스 배출량을 가지고 있습니다. 이러한 특성 때문에 바이오디젤은 지속 가능한 에너지 원처로 인기를 얻고 있으며, 기후 변화를 완화하는데 도움이 될 수 있습니다.

바이오디젤의 제조 과정은 식물성 오일이나 동물성 지방에 알코올(예: 메탄올)을 첨가하고 촉매를 이용해 가수분해를 진행하여 글리세린과 메틸 에스터(바이오디젤)를 생성하는 과정입니다. 이러한 과정을 트랜스 에스터화라고 합니다.
